Modern Farmhouse is one of the hottest new home plan designs out there today. People are loving the clean simple lines made more interesting with lots of texture.
Having remodeled our 1970’s tri-level to get the Modern Farmhouse of my dreams I’ve studied closely what it takes to get the Modern Farmhouse exterior look.
Enjoy!

So what exactly gives a house the Modern Farmhouse Style?
Characterized by the clean, straight, simple lines and minimal ornamentation make it a favorite of many who are looking to build or remodel a home.
Attributes of Modern Farmhouse exteriors include:
- Gabled roof with steep pitches
- Black windows
- Standing seam metal roof – often black
- Lapboard or board and batten siding – or if you are remodeling – painted brick
- Solid white exterior – not required but extremely popular – but it must be one color.
- Open porches
- Double Hung windows – and lots of them for natural light
- House has a pieced together look that has happened over time
Although the classic black and white style has been a favorite for many years, there are several trends out there to consider when choosing your design.
In this post, I’m going to give you 5 Modern Farmhouse plans to inspire you as you look for your exterior style. This will be a great resource for you to use when designing your home for your family.
Classic Black and White Modern Farmhouse

First up and probably the most common is the classic black and white style. This style is characterized by white board and batten siding and a black metal roof with lots of wood trim. I think this simple clean look will be around for a really long time if not forever. What’s more classic than black and white. Right?
The clean lines look so fresh and you can use lots of texture such as mixing different sidings together to give it interest. I also love using bits of wood accents on the porches and in the eves for added style.

This plan from Architectural Designs is a great example of this style. This 2,400 S.F. 3-Bedroom home has a great open floor plan with a vaulted ceiling in the den.
This is a great size house for empty nesters who are downsizing. We downsized 2 years ago and I absolutely love it. I would never go back to trying to take care of 5000 + S.F. But everyone has their own wants and needs.

European Spin on Modern Farmhouse
This farmhouse looks like you would find it in the middle of a European farm. In this plan, you get that old-world style juxtaposed with sleek modern materials. What could be better?
Of course, you could use whatever materials you choose but I love the architect’s choice of stained wood siding paired with a black metal roof and bits of stone as accents. The black windows are a modern style to give this house a clean uncluttered feel.

Dark and Moody Modern Farmhouse

Out of the 5 Modern Farmhouse plans to inspire you, this is by far my favorite trend out there right now for Modern Farmhouse exterior style. There is just something so cool and unique about a dark painted house surrounded by lots of land and trees. I was a goner the first time I saw one of these babies on Pinterest.
The architect has mixed the dark paint with black modern windows, lots of stone and brown wood accents. The use of texture is a beautiful combination.
This Plan is right around 3,000 s.f. and has 3-4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Not a huge house but I’m a big fan of the glass wall on the back of the house to capture the views. This house would be dreamy in the woods! Don’t you think?

I love the open floor plan of the living room, kitchen, and dining rooms. With more and more people working from home these days I love that it has a first-floor office in the front of the house.
Having all the bedrooms together on the second floor can be important to young families who have small children.
Scandinavian Modern Farmhouse
Another one of my favorites is Scandinavian Modern Farmhouse. I love how it blends the rustic charm of Danish design and the down-to-earth feel of American farmhouse. It is characterized by lots of white, large windows that let in tons of natural light, and a minimalist approach to design.

This Plan from America’s Best House Plans is a 3,000 s.f. with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. I love the architect’s use of natural wood and the straight lines of the shed roof. This home also has tons of windows for taking in the scenery and giving the home tons of natural light which is key in the Scandinavian design.

But what about the Classic Traditional Modern Farmhouse? This might be just what you are looking for. This 3,000 s.f. 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bath plan has an open kitchen, dining, and living room layout with the master suite on the first floor. It has a front and back staircase that leads to the second-floor bedrooms for your convenience.
