Is there anybody out there that doesn’t love a cozy fireplace? If I have to live in a state with winter weather then I have to have a fireplace.
Since remodeling our current house, I have been able to paint out our large brick fireplace and install a giant reclaimed wood mantel and gas logs. It gave our fireplace mantel just the right amount of Modern Farmhouse style. Now let’s get to styling your Modern Farmhouse mantel like a Pro. I’ve already changed mine up a couple of times and I had tons of fun decorating it for fall and Christmas.
Styling a Modern Farmhouse Mantel Like A Pro
Step 1 – Gathering your Modern Farmhouse decor items
Just like my adjoining Modern Farmhouse bookcases – see here. Start gathering the items you want to display on your mantel. Make sure that your items are different in size, shape, and color. I like to use items like:
- mirrors
- artwork
- clocks
- plants
- candlesticks
- books
- vases of flowers or greenery
- pieces of metal or concrete art

Step 2 – Creating your Modern Farmhouse Vignette with an Anchor
Now it’s time to take all those beautiful and interesting pieces that you procured and start creating your showstopper Modern Farmhouse mantel.
There are 3 main components when styling a mantel. The first one that you will focus on is the Anchor.
Anchor – the focal point of the mantel vignette. This will be the largest piece of your design. Pieces like an oversized metal wall clock, a large piece of art, or a mirror work well. You can also use two smaller pieces of artwork and overlap them if you don’t have one piece that is large enough. Make sure that your scale is good here so that as you are building a visual triangle with the pieces of your design this will be the top of the triangle.
Here are a couple of great alternatives for Anchors to get you started. I’ve had this clock for about 5 years and it’s classic and will never go out of style.

Step 3 – Now Add Height to the Vignette.
Now let’s focus on the second component which is height.
Height – next you add some visual height to the sides of your vignette. Again making sure that the texture and color are different from your anchor and the background. Candlesticks or vases of greenery work great to build height and add organic life.
Modern Farmhouse style is a simple, minimalist and casual so to Style your Modern Farmhouse mantel like a pro, be sure to keep a balanced asymmetry rather than a more formal symmetrical display.

Step 4 – Now Add Layers/Filler
Layers/Filler – here you fill in or layer over your 3 main pieces. You can use books, plants, and small art items. Fill in space between being careful to leave plenty of white space so that it doesn’t look cluttered.
